LESSON: The Cost of ‘Progress’Resilience in the Face of Forces Beyond Control
SYNOPSIS: As Hurricane Mitch bore down on Honduras, Pierre and I fortified our home and moved to a safer part of the island with others. Though the storm spared Roatán, its aftermath reshaped our lives. Amid the solitude of the deserted island, I found joy in underwater photography and took steps to protect the fragile ecosystem, including launching an eco-friendly mosquito control program. However, my efforts clashed with the unstoppable tide of tourism and unchecked development. While Pierre accepted the inevitability of change, I struggled with the destruction of the environment I loved. The storm left more than physical damage—it marked the beginning of a deeper battle between my ideals and the reality of a rapidly transforming island.
