The Balance of Yin and Yang in Tai Chi

May 25, 2026

Balance is not stillness.

Balance is a constant adjustment between opposites. In Tai Chi, balance is always moving. It's a relationship, between all the parts in your body and how everything communicates and adjusts from moment to the next. When one part moves, everything else responds.

Every relationship in Tai Chi is a Yinyang relationship. One side is full when the other side is empty, and then they switch. The switch is the living part of the relationship of your body while it practices Tai Chi and anything else you might do in your life, for that matter.

It is also you and your body parts relating to the world around you. Tai Chi is the art of keeping everything connected while everything is in constant movement and change. In Tai Chi, nothing moves alone. One part supports the other. One is full while one is empty, always changing.

Look at your life. Where do you do too much doing and not enough allowing?

Overworking is too much Yang.

Avoiding is too much Yin.

Forcing decisions is too much Yang,

and not deciding at all is too much Yin.
