The Meaning of “Song” in Tai Chi

The word 'song' in Chinese is often translated as 'relax,' but that translation can be misleading. It doesn’t mean being limp, zoned out, or collapsed on the couch. 'Song' is a very specific kind of relaxation. It is structured, awake, and connected.

It is the principle of being soft but still supported. Soft, but strong. Relaxed, but not careless.

In 'song', you release unnecessary tension without losing your shape. You let go of stiffness, but you do not collapse. The structure of the body is still alive and organized.

In this posture, the joints gently open. The body feels as if it is hanging from the top of the head. The crown connects upward, as if linked to the universe, while everything else softens and releases underneath.

This alignment supports better circulation. Movement becomes smoother and more natural when the body is soft in the right way. The mind also begins to settle. Instead of reacting automatically, there is space to respond with awareness.

Without 'song', the body feels disconnected. There is stiffness in some places and collapse in others. Energy cannot move freely. With song, there is a sense of internal power. You can actually feel the strength that travels through your body when everything is aligned and relaxed at the same time.

Take a moment to scan your body. Where are you holding unnecessary tension while sitting? Where is there stiffness, or where are you slumping without awareness? Notice one place in your body that is working too hard for no reason.

Now soften it. Let the shoulders sink. Let the elbows drop. Allow everything to settle downward. Even the waist should remain relaxed. Think of a baby learning to sit for the first time—the waist is naturally soft, not held or forced.

Song is the practice of being awake while relaxed, When you can achieve song, it feels like supported softness, and natural strength and something to be aware of while you practice Tai Chi.
